Production has commenced today in Albuquerque, New Mexico on Marvel Studios' highly anticipated movie "Marvel's The Avengers," directed by Joss Whedon ("Serenity") from a screenplay by Whedon. The film will continue principal photography in Cleveland, Ohio and New York City. Robert Downey, Jr. ("Iron Man," "Iron Man 2") returns as the iconic Tony Stark/Iron Man along with Chris Hemsworth ("Thor") as Thor, Chris Evans ("Captain America: The First Avenger") as Captain America, Jeremy Renner ("Thor," "The Hurt Locker") as Hawkeye, Mark Ruffalo ("The Kids Are Alright") as Hulk, Scarlett Johansson ("Iron Man 2") as Black Widow, Clark Gregg ("Iron Man," "Thor") as Agent Phil Coulson, and Samuel L. Jackson ("Iron Man," "Iron Man 2") as Nick Fury. Set for release in the US on May 4, 2012, "Marvel's The Avengers" is the first feature to be fully owned, marketed and distributed by Disney, which acquired Marvel in 2009.

Continuing the epic big-screen adventures started in "Iron Man," "The Incredible Hulk," "Iron Man 2," "Thor," and "Captain America: The First Avenger," "Marvel's The Avengers" is the super hero team up of a lifetime. When an unexpected enemy emerges that threatens global safety and security, Nick Fury, director of the international peacekeeping agency known as S.H.I.E.L.D., finds himself in need of a team to pull the world back from the brink of disaster.

Based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series, first published in 1963, "Marvel's The Avengers" brings together the mightiest super hero characters as they all assemble together on screen for the first time. The star studded cast of super heroes will be joined by Cobie Smulders ("How I Met Your Mother) as Agent Maria Hill of S.H.I.E.L.D., as well as Tom Hiddleston ("Wallander") and Stellan Skarsgård ("Angels & Demons," "Mamma Mia!") who will both reprise their respective roles as Loki and Professor Erik Selvig from the upcoming Marvel Studios' feature "Thor."

"Marvel's The Avengers" is being produced by Marvel Studios' President, Kevin Feige, and executive produced by Alan Fine, Stan Lee, Louis D'Esposito, Patty Whitcher, and Jon Favreau. Marvel Studios' Jeremy Latcham and Victoria Alonso will co-produce.

The creative production team also includes Oscar nominated director of photography Seamus McGarvey ("Atonement"), production designer James Chinlund ("25th Hour"), Oscar winning costume designer Alexandra Byrne ("Elizabeth: The Golden Age"), Oscar winning visual effects supervisor Janek Sirrs ("Iron Man 2," "The Matrix"), visual effects producer Susan Pickett ("Iron Man," "Iron Man 2"), stunt coordinator R.A. Rondell ("Superman Returns"), and four-time Oscar nominated special effects supervisor Dan Sudick ("Iron Man," "War of the Worlds"). The editors include Oscar nominated Paul Rubell ("Collateral") and Jeffrey Ford ("Crazy Heart").

Marvel Studios most recently produced "Iron Man 2" which was released in theatres on May 7, 2010. The sequel to "Iron Man," starring Robert Downey, Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow as well as Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson and Mickey Rourke, took the number one spot its first weekend with a domestic box office gross of $128.1 million. To date the film has earned over $620 million in worldwide box office receipts.

In the summer of 2008, Marvel produced the summer blockbuster movies, "Iron Man" and "The Incredible Hulk." "Iron Man," in which Robert Downey, Jr. originally dons the super hero's powerful armor alongside co-stars Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges and Gwyneth Paltrow, was released May 2, 2008 and was an immediate box office success. Garnering the number one position for two weeks in a row, the film brought in over $100 million its opening weekend and grossed over $571 million worldwide. On June 13, 2008, Marvel released "The Incredible Hulk" marking its second number one opener of that summer. The spectacular revival of the iconic green goliath grossed over $250 million in worldwide box office receipts.

Kevin Feige Confirms Thor and Captain America Sequels

Source: IGN , D23 April 19, 2011

Details about the future of the Marvel Universe on the big screen have been revealed thanks to IGN and an upcoming interview in Disney's D23 magazine. In it, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige drops a number of intriguing hints about what the studio has in the works.

"Thor will go off into a new adventure," says Feige, "and Captain America will continue to explore the modern world in another film of his own. We hope that holds true for the characters appearing in that film — Black Widow, Hawkeye, and the spy organization, S.H.I.E.L.D. — all of whom are more than worthy and capable of carrying their own films. And, we've got a lot of other characters we're prepping and getting ready for film debuts: the world of martial arts, these great cosmic space fantasies, Dr. Strange, and the magic side of the Marvel Universe. There are many, many stories to be mined."

Though Doctor Strange, Black Widow and S.H.I.E.L.D. films have been previously brought up as potential projects, a Hawkeye feature is new to the discussion as is confirmation that Captain America 2 will be set in the present.

Marvel Studios, in the meantime, is gearing up for an incredible summer slate with Thor hitting on May 6th and Captain America: The First Avenger following on July 22nd.

Chris Evans on Captain America and The Avengers

Source: USA Weekend April 17, 2011

Chris Evans talked to USA Weekend about how Captain America will have to adjust to the modern world in The Avengers and how Captain America: The First Avenger will feature a "Captain America song." Here is an excerpt from the interview:

In the Marvel comics, Cap is a guy who went from the 1940s to modern times when he’s found encased in ice by the Avengers. Assuming part of that will be in The Avengers movie, your Cap will have to live in a world that’s very different from what he’s used to.

Yeah, at least there’s some meat on the bone. You want to play a character that has conflict – that’s what makes a character appealing to an actor, getting to find an arc and a reason, something to chew on. And that’s a lot. If you woke up one day and it was 50, 60 years in the future and everyone you knew had passed away and the entire world around you is different — you don’t have a friend, you don’t know anybody, you don’t know anything — that’d be a lot to take in. It’s exciting as an actor to try and tackle that.

What’s this I hear about a “Captain America song”?

There is a Captain America song, but I don’t sing it. Initially in the film, when he becomes Captain America, long story short the serum is destroyed and they can’t reproduce the experiment so I’m the only super soldier there is. The U.S. government won’t allow me to go to war because it’s too risky and they can’t afford to lose me, but they use me as a propaganda tool and they send me on a USO Tour. So there’s a whole Captain America song, and they try to make him a little bit of a celebrity to try and sell bonds. There is a Captain America song, and there was a week of shooting, and I had that song in my head. I couldn’t stop humming it! It was so annoying. But it’s a funny sequence actually.

You can check out the full interview here!Captain America: The First Avenger opens in theaters on July 22 and The Avengers on May 4, 2012.

Michael Bay Previews Transformers: Dark of the Moon!

Source: Ryan Turek April 15, 2011

Most people go to the gym to maintain their health. Others go to work out their frustrations after a long stressful day. Michael Bay? Sure, he likely goes for those reasons, but when it came to Transformers: Dark of the Moon - the third entry in the extremely lucrative franchise - he used his gym time to think about mass destruction, namely one particular moment in the story in which a building needed to be brought down.

"When I work with writers, it's about what I want to do and what I've never done. I came up with this scene, doing these dumb stomach crunches, I'm like 'this building scene, oh my God, that's what I want to do!' There was a reason why [our characters] had to go into this building and I figured out what I wanted to do to that building after. Anything you can imagine with Transformers makes it fun."

NEW IMAGE: Check out Optimus Prime in action!

Bay speaks to ComingSoon.net/SuperHeroHype on this gorgeous day on the Paramount lot where he's prepared to show select members of the press an early peek at footage from his massive summer offering, which he is bringing to the screen in 3D. He clarifies that he aims to make amends for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, the 2009 sequel that grossed nearly half a billion dollars domestically.

"You don't make that much money on a movie - it doesn't become the number one movie in America that year if people hated it," Bay says honestly. "Yes, it might have gone south on the direction, but we were under the gun. There was a terrible writers strike and it was a sh*t position to be in. We were under a tremendous amount of pressure. We had to write it real quick. A lot of people [on a third film] will check out and get a paycheck. I've been working every day for two years because I want to make up for the second one and I want to leave this franchise the best I can."

This time--with the aid of screenwriter Ehren Kruger--more time was allotted in script development on "Dark of the Moon," a "solid" eight months. Bay admits that it is difficult to tap into the innocence of the first film and the sense of awe it delivered. Audiences by now have grown desensitized to the giant robot spectacle. As Bay puts it, "The genie is out of the bottle."

"This one is a more mature storyline, definitely darker, more emotional in the end. You feel the stakes are higher because it takes place in an American city. You're not disconnected with Egypt and the pyramids. I'm very happy with the movie," he says, touching lightly on the story we can expect to see. "It's a small group and you follow them. There's no cavalry coming. I've said this with Ehren, we were talking about concept, we used the term 'Black Hawk Down.' We try to make the cavalry unable to come. And it's more fun to watch our heroes in this epic ending with just a small group. It makes it more intimate."

Bay is hesitant to call the film "bigger," but everything we witnessed moments later in the Paramount theater screams "huge" (although we do understand what Bay meant story-wise). Of the nearly 20 minutes of footage shown to us (with an extra five shown in 3D), it's clear Bay is taking the series to new heights in every respect.

Unfortunately, we're not allowed to go into details, but we will say, it's merciless.

The scope will immediately register with you when a new full-length trailer assaults your senses on April 28th… and yes, you'll even get a glimpse of that aforementioned building that Bay creatively destroyed.

Robot-wise, he promises to delve deeper into their personalities. "This is a very involved robot story. I hate letting the cat out of the bag, but you just learn more about the hierarchy, what goes on a Cybertron. Leonard Nimoy plays a great role. I was scared to ask him, but he said, 'Sure, I'd be glad to be back.'" Bay accredits Kruger for pulling Sentinel Prime (Nimoy's role) into the story, but pushed for more details on the other Transformers fans can expect to see, the director clams up. "You notice we're not putting a lot of stuff out there." Don't expect the "twins" from "Revenge of the Fallen," that's for certain. "There are two small characters. They start off a bit goofy, but they have a huge comeback. One of them is a new character."

As for the human element, there are a number of new additions to the cast (John Malkovich and Ken Jeong chewed the scenery in some of the scenes we saw - and let's not forget Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Shia LaBeouf's latest, gorgeous co-star). And--as with the robot action--Bay is pushing the boundaries of what he has done. "We've got these wing suit guys. You see them on 60 Minutes jumping off the cliffs? I'm writing a scene for those guys," Bay laughs. For those wondering what he's talking about, you may have spotted the wing suits in a previously-released teaser trailer. "We have this great scene where they fly between these buildings. We had to block off a mile and a half of Chicago's streets and they jump off of the Sears Tower and fly between the buildings. That's unheard of.

Bay agrees "Dark of the Moon" will bring a sense of closure in regards to his stamp on the series. He believes, however, that there is going to be plenty of room to "reboot" it. "Not with Shia," he grins. "He's turning grumpy in his old age. You put him on a wire and he just turns into this evil monster."

Up next, the director says he would like to do Pain and Gain, a Pulp Fiction-like project, "a true story with these boneheads looking for the American dream. A lot of actors have gravitated to it over the years. It's something to shoot that would be fun and fast."

Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to prevent nuclear Armageddon. Todd Phillips Talks The Hangover Part II

One of the more exciting aspects of last week's CinemaCon was the return of prodigal son Todd Phillips, whose trailer for The Hangover debuted there two years ago to huge acclaim. The prolific comedy director was there to present the first full trailer for The Hangover Part II, which appeared almost simultaneously online, as part of Warner Bros.' The Big Picture 2011. The anticipated sequel has the characters played by Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms and Zach Galifianakis traveling to Bangkok in Thailand for another bachelor party (this time for Helms' Stu) and waking up the next morning after blacking out everything that happened the night before.

Phillips is clearly exhausted after making three back-to-back movies with no break in between, but he's also fairly anxious about letting too many of the surprises for the sequel get out before people have had a chance to see the full movie for themselves. Even so, ComingSoon.net had two chances to talk to Phillips briefly, once before the presentation and once after, so we mostly talked to him about how making the sequel compared to the original and a similar line of questioning.

ComingSoon.net: One thing I'm really impressed by is how fast you make movies. I noticed that with the first "Hangover" and then "Due Date" came out pretty quickly, but I noticed that there's a lot more action in the trailer and you mentioned earlier the difficulties with shooting in Bangkok.
Todd Phillips: Here's the thing. The thing is, I don't have a life, I really don't, maybe on the first "Hangover." Since the first "Hangover," there hasn't been a day I've had off. I'm physically exhausted. (Laughs) It's crazy. It is, because I don't make movies that look they were shot in a room, like a TV show. You see movies that look like TV shows, and you go, "What the f*ck is this, it looks like it was shot in three sets and what the f*ck?" We try to make epic films. I think "The Hangover" and I think "Due Date" and I know "The Hangover 2" have a real cinematic scale to them that I take really seriously as a filmmaker. I'm honored to be able to do it. I want to make movies. I meant what I said up there when I was like, "If I wanted to make TV I'd be making TV." I love making movies. A, I appreciate you noticing because it has been a bit of a ridiculous schedule to do three movies in three years - I don't know that anybody has been doing that a lot, and I don't recommend it and I'm definitely going to take some downtime. (Laughs)

CS: The trailer looked really stylish, and I don't know if it's the same DP you've used in the other films...
Phillips: Yeah, it is. He's always my guy, yeah. I have had the same team of everybody since almost the beginning. We all make movies together, and I just love the family vibe of making a movie. It's the best part about it.

CS: What was cool about the first "Hangover" is that you wrote it for your friends with them in mind. I've talked to Ed and Bradley in the last couple of months, and I was curious whether there was a very different vibe making the sequel and was it harder?
Phillips: It was crazy. I don't know what they said, but for me, day one of shooting "The Hangover Part II" was like we never stopped shooting the other movie. Surely, Zach and I had just done "Due Date" together and that came out six months ago, but everyone just fell into their thing, and there wasn't the nervousness that you always have at the beginning of your movie of like, "Where is this character coming from? What am I doing?" Everybody was so informed as to what they were playing, and I was informed as to what movie I was making. The cameraman was informed. It was just sort of was, in a weird way, so easy. The difficult part was just being in Bangkok and just being disconnected from everything else. It's not a very film-friendly culture, you know? So that part was difficult and the language and all that stuff, crews, it's harder, but the movie was just such a fun time because we all just sort of knew our roles.

CS: I think the first movie, you found the script and you developed it for them. This one, you obviously developed from the very beginning, so in the two years since the last movie, had you talked to any of those guys about where they wanted their character to go?
Phillips:; I would pitch them ideas as I saw them around and we all stayed in touch because we're friends. Even when we were shooting "Due Date" I was like, "Do you think Alan, dah, dah, dah, dah?" and he'd laugh or not, but they also let me make the movie, which is super-great. I definitely--just because I trust them and because it's their movie as much as mine--involved them in it, just updating them. Ed'll send an email, "Where's the script at? Dah, dah, dah," and I'll give him like bullet points of what it is. He'll be like, "That sounds great," or "Why?" So yeah, in some ways just a little bit just out of just the normal just staying in touch communication.

CS: I know you're busy, but have you had a chance to keep up with what they've been doing in other movies?
Phillips: I've seen "Limitless" and I've seen "Cedar Rapids." I actually see all their movies, yes, and I saw "It's Kind of a Funny Story," and I liked all the movies. I really loved "Cedar Rapids" and I thought Bradley is just f**king a movie star now. I mean, I just think he's going to crush it.

CS: Oh yeah, having "Limitless" open at number one, that was great for him.
Phillips: It's great, yeah.

CS: I asked you this before "The Hangover" with taking on Will Ferrell and "Land of the Lost," so how do you feel about taking on Jack Black Memorial Day weekend?
Phillips: Why? What's Jack Black in?

CS: "Kung Fu Panda 2."
Phillips: Right, but that's a kids' movie.

CS: It's a kids' movie, I know, but that's the weekend everyone is watching this summer.
Phillips: Is it?

CS: It's gonna be the weekend everyone thinks is going to have two $80 million movies.
Phillips: Oh my God. I don't know that there'll be an R-rated movie that's $80 million, there hasn't been, but I just see that not as a competition. I think this summer is gonna be a blood battle all around. I think there's a lotta big movies coming out. I mean, it's scary. I don't think anything's a sure thing, even "Kung Fu Panda 2" or "Hangover 2." It's just like, who knows what's gonna happen? But it's fun, it's part of the fun.

CS: One thing I realized that you don't have to show much from this movie in advance because people will want to see it regardless, and I think the teaser was cool for that reason.
Phillips: I agree with you on that.

CS: You don't have to show anything because you can just say, "These guys are back."
Phillips: I like that. I cut that teaser where they're just walking, it's just like confidence like, "Hey, you're either with us or you're not. We don't care. Come or don't. Here's the f**king thing." (Laughs)

CS: Do you know what you're going to do for the commercials so they don't give away too much?
Phillips: Well, I mean, the truth is we're constrained by the fact that we're R-rated, so you can't give - even the trailer you just saw, that's a PG-13 trailer, so by the nature of the movie, we're holding so much stuff back just because you can't show it. So believe me, you won't believe the R-rated surprises that exist in "The Hangover" that you won't see touched on in commercials or trailers, really.

CS: It was great seeing you again.
Phillips: You too. Thanks for doing this.

CS: I hope you get a couple of days off.
Phillips: (Laughs) Yes, I will.

Now let's travel back in time to before the presentation when we had a chance to talk to Phillips briefly about being back in Vegas to show the first footage to exhibitors as well as filming in Bangkok:

This weekend at the San Francisco WonderCon, Disney•Pixar debuted a new viral for Cars 2 in the form of a car parked outside the Moscone Center that featured the Twitter handle @ChromeLeaks. The Twitter account sends fans to Cars-N-Deals.com, which is a faux advertisement for "Cars N' Deals of Emeryville" directed by Chris Cantwell (who directed the Lots-o-Huggin' Bear faux ad last year for Toy Story 3).

WonderCon: The Cowboys & Aliens Panel

Fandom favorites Jon Favreau and Roberto Orci took to WonderCon's stage today to promote their upcoming Cowboys & Aliens.

With the film hitting theaters on July 29th (the week after Comic-Con), Favreau explained that this is his last chance for audience reaction to have a serious effect on the post-production process of the film. With nine minutes of footage revealed to a very happy crowd, Favreau looks to be on the right track.

The footage begins with Daniel Craig, beaten and bloody, walking into an empty western town. He looks in the window of a building that appears to be abandoned and goes inside, examining his wounds in the mirror. At his side is a strange cut, like a fresh appendectomy scar, but just as he examines it, he finds a gun to his head. The gunman tells him that only criminals or victims get shot and wants to know which one he is. Craig says he doesn't know. The gunman asks him his name and he says he doesn't know that either.

"What do you know?" asks the gunman.

"English," says Craig.

The next scene has Harrison Ford's character in a field that's filled with the remains of cattle. He's got a man on the ground tied up in ropes and asks him what kind of a person blows up cows for fun. The man on the ground tries to explain that it wasn't him and we see the scene in a flashback. He's in the field with the cattle when an alien weapon detonates, obliterating everything and knocking the man into the water. Ford doesn't believe him and slaps the back of the horse that the man is tied to. It takes off, dragging the man across the desert to his death while Ford and his men, mercilessly ride back to town.

Following that is an extended version of the scene in the trailer where the spaceship makes it's first appearance to the shock of the town. Craig and Ford (who clearly don't like or trust one another) approach the downed ship while the rest of the town (including Sam Rockwell as a townsperson whose wife has been taken) look on in fear. Craig and Ford move closer and closer, Ford with his six-shooter and Craig with his high-tech wrist device. There's a jump when Ford nervously shoots the ship by mistake and then catches himself.

On the ground, there are large alien footprints. Ford says that he's going out in search of those who have been kidnapped and tells Craig that he's coming along whether he likes it or not because he's got the only weapon that's effective against the aliens. The two argue to the point of punching one another in the face, but seem to reluctantly team up.

From there, the footage goes into a montage, including the first shot of an alien. They're large, multi-limbed creatures, though Favreau noted that the one we saw (which is very loosely sketched below from memory) is different from the ones that will be used in marketing. He also added that the footage won't be put online in this version.

Other highlights of the panel included Favreau stating (with a laugh) that he won't cameo in Cowboys & Aliens after "Family Guy" made fun of him for being in all his own movies. He also said that, while he won't be directing Iron Man 3, he loves Shane Black and is "open to anything" when it comes to reprising his role as Happy Hogan.
