International Trailer for Jean-Jacques Annaud's Black Gold

An international trailer for Jean-Jacques Annaud's drama Black Gold (AKA "Or Noir") has come online and can be watched using the player below.

Starring Antonio Banderas, Mark Strong, Frieda Pinto and Tahar Rahim, the film centers on a young Arab prince torn between allegiance to his conservative father and modern, liberal father-in-law as well as the rivalry between two Emirs in Arabia. The movie features music by James Horner.

A North American distributor has not yet been announced.

USA Today has debuted these seven photos from Universal Pictures' American Reunion, coming to theaters on April 6.

A Preview of James Cameron's Titanic 3D Rerelease

Earlier this week, ComingSoon.net had a chance to watch roughly 18 minutes, essentially 8 key scenes, from James Cameron's Oscar-winning 1997 film Titanic, which has been converted into 3D for the film's rerelease in April 2012 to coincide with the 100th Anniversary of its sinking. The footage was followed by a short Q&A session with the filmmaker and his producer Jon Landau to talk about the conversion process as well as the reasoning that went into doing this rerelease.

In his introduction, Cameron stressed that he wouldn't be changing a single frame of the original movie, but unlike other 3D post-production conversions, they're spending over a year working with 300 artists to go through every shot and pixel of the movie and do what's necessary to make the new theatrical experience as relevant and memorable as the original. Cameron's intentions are to use the conversion process to create a movie that has the same depth of field it might have if he had been able to shoot the movie in 3D originally, using the decade of experience he's had with 3D photography and filmmaking to make sure every scene looks as good as it possibly can.

The clips shown were taken from different points in the three-hour film, beginning with a scene of the boarding of the Titanic from the opening of the movie, an absolutely stunning shot in 3D where you can see the throngs of people on the docks stretching for hundreds of yards with the Titanic looming above them, as Kate Winslet's Rose arrives to board. The next scene took place much later in the movie, and it involved Leonardo DiCaprio's Jack meeting Rose on the stairs, so we could see what the added dimension does to bring to life the interior sets that were built for the movie, followed by a scene of Rose down in steerage dancing with Jack, before being found and brought back upstairs for an awkward breakfast with her fiancé (It's impressive how much younger both actors look in 3D!)

The most impressive shot was the tracking shot of the bow of the boat when Jack and Rose are on there and she's pretending to fly, because the 3D really gives you a feel of how high the ship was from the water, and watching the camera pan so fluidly across the bow with the water shimmering below shows what sort of care is being put into making the movie look just as good in 3D. This isn't the typical converted movie that seems to have very obvious layers between foreground and background.

They also showed four scenes from the actual crash and sinking of the boat, beginning with the spotting of the iceberg and the moments leading up to the crash. The longest sequence we watched shows Rose going below decks to look for Jack, who has been handcuffed to a pipe by her boyfriend's guard, and after finding him, she frantically tries to get help in order to rescue him as the ship sinks deeper and deeper. This was another good example of how good the water looks in 3D, because there are many scenes in this sequence of Rose looking down one hallway or another which stretches into the distance. We also watched the scene with everyone clamoring to board the lifeboats and cutting them free as the water started reaching the decks, then the final scene had Jack and Rose back on the railing of the boat, but this time as the ship jutted straight out of the water before its final plunge.

The footage had real depth and dimension but the 3D was never distracting, and it did add a lot to seeing these scenes, especially having not seen the film in over ten years and on a big screen in even longer. Although Cameron mentioned they're really pushing how far they could take the 3D depth of field with the process, it didn't seem to be as noticeable in these later scenes, maybe because the more activity on screen warranted less 3D tinkering. Cameron and Landau looked at this process as a creative visual FX process rather than a technical one, and we were surprised to learn that doing this post-conversion process didn't require bringing back the original film's DP Russell Carpenter or the original FX team, since the original movie was more model-based, so there weren't hard drives full of computer data that could be used to make the process easier. Cameron said, "I consider that a part of the process of conversion which is all visual FX, where every single shot, no matter how simple it was--like an insert shot of somebody picking up a fork--is now a visual FX shot with 20 artists working on it."

"While many movies take six weeks for the whole process, we're taking sixty weeks," Landau added. "You can't do justice to water, you can't do justice to smoke, you can't do justice to a close-up in six weeks. You're just jamming it together and a lot of times the director's not even there for that process." Cameron feels that much of the problems that have led to the backlash against 3D comes from studios forcing their filmmakers to release their movies in 3D, which often relies on a decision by the accountants to convert rather than shoot in 3D because it's cheaper, even though the results aren't the same.

Cameron also reflected on the success of the original movie 14 years ago and why it warranted this sort of rerelease. "I was trying to account for what was similar between the 'Titanic' phenomenon and the 'Avatar' phenomenon, which proved very similar in a way. Even though the movies were completely different and didn't even always necessarily play to the same segments of the audience. I think it was that decision to see the film on the big screen and I think the 3D part of that gives people a reason to go to the movie theater. But I think there's a lot more going on with it than just that."

He gave a couple examples of this. "There are younger kids we're going to have to sell it to that don't know the movie. There's going to be a teenage audience that only knows the movie from video, and the question is whether they know that just from peer-to-peer or is it passed on from watching it with their family, their parents? There's social aspects to it we can't understand. I've always thought of the watching of this film in theaters as being a social phenomenon where parents could take their children or a teenager would go with his Mom where people would actually make their social appointments to go, and that's why the film was still cranking strong in the 10th, 12th and 16th week, because it takes people time to get that all worked out. 'I'm definitely going to see it in a theatre. I'm not going to see some pirated cheesy download. I've made that decision, now I have to figure out who I'm going to go with.' Very often, there was a lot of repeat viewing, but I don't think it was people going back solo and watching it over and over having the same experience. I think it was people communicating what they experienced with someone else."

"The way both Fox and Paramount are approaching this is as a new release," Landau added. "I think you'll see the campaigns that are very aggressive to a new audience, just like would be on any new release."

"They're marketing it with the energy of a new tentpole release," Cameron agreed, "but you can't sell it the way you would sell a franchise movie in the marketplace, because you're not going to take the time to tell people the story. You're going to make the assumption they know the story, but we kind of made that assumption the first time around, because the over-arching story of Titanic is so well known. We're not trying to tell the story in the trailer, and we're really happy with the trailer, because actually it's more of a memory-skewing device to remind you of how the film worked, that it wasn't this sappy romance, that there was real jeopardy and the threat of hideous death for these people that overshadowed these light romantic moments. That juxtaposition of love and death that made the film powerful and poignant."

When asked whether the rerelease is being done merely to push the gross of Titanic over that of its record-breaking follow-up Avatar, he joked, "Because we're just greedy motherf*ckers, and we didn't make enough the first time around. It just felt right in the centenary of the sinking of Titanic to bring this back out for fans who either are fans of the movie but have never had the widescreen experience or are fans of the movie who remember it from back then and want to re-experience that. I think it's perfectly valid."

"Let's remind ourselves - Hollywood is a business, and there's nothing wrong with that," he continued. "I personally am interested in fostering and promoting 3D as a viable business, and not only for the cinema, but the home market as well, so having a successful film in 3D is a good thing. Whether I'm involved with it or not, I'm happy. It doesn't matter what that 3D title is, because it helps the business."

When asked about making changes in the movie, Cameron joked that he'll let George Lucas be the filmmaker who goes back to his earlier work and changes things. "That's an example of what I don't want to do," he quipped, then added. "That's not a slam. I think he considers his movies a perpetual work in progress. For me, the problem is when you pull that thread, it all unravels because where do you stop? For example, I've done three expeditions to the Titanic, I've done literally hundreds of hours of exploration of the interior of the wreck, always photographing all the stairwells, so I know the places where the film is wrong." In other words, Cameron has been able to learn a lot more information about the interiors of the Titanic than he had when he made the movie, but he knows that going back to fix those things would be very time-consuming.

One of the surprising things we learned is that those who may be adverse to 3D will also have a chance to see Titanic in a pristine new digital 2D and 2D IMAX version coming off the new 4K Master created in the process. Both Cameron and Landau thought that far too much emphasis of the story was put on the 3D of Avatar and how that contributed to its record-breaking box office. Similarly, he feels that too much of the media are to blame for the idea that 3D is losing ground at the box office just because it may be accounting for smaller percentages of a movie's take, and he's not worried about it affecting the rerelease either.

"Look, I think there's a trick to how you play the 3D card in the marketing of this," Cameron stated while stressing that the focus of the rerelease is to give those who loved the movie another chance to have the theatrical experience. "The 3D is interesting and it does galvanize the experience and ratchet it up to a new level, but it's still 'Titanic' in a movie theater which a lot of people have never seen, so from my perspective, I'd like that to be the lead line, that it's 'Titanic' being released after 14 years away on the 100th Anniversary of the Titanic itself to a new generation that's never seen it in theatres... and it's in 3D!"

Cameron isn't ruling out the idea of someday rereleasing some of his other popular movies like T2 in this manner, but for now, the filmmakers are going to be off-the-grid making the sequels to Avatar, and it was only the time they had between to see how this experiment of converting and rereleasing might work with Landau considering Titanic a "no-brainer" for this sort of re-release.

Cameron concluded with his thought on this. "We've seen one 3D rerelease so far that's been successful (The Lion King), and we're about to see another one right after the first of the year with Star Wars and then we'll be the third one, and then after that, I think we'll have a sense of whether people consider that valid. Maybe with the changing way people consume media, the idea of these favorite, beloved movies actually do have a place back in the cinema."

Titanic will get its rerelease into 3D, 2D and 3D IMAX theatres on April 6, 2012.

Haywire Poster Debuts

A rapid follow-up from his recent hit, Contagion, Steven Soderbergh is set to release Haywire early next year. The official poster for the action film has just come online and is viewable below.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar Gina Carano ("American Gladiators") makes her feature film debut in the January 20 release, starring and performing her own high-adrenaline stunts. The film's cast also includes Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton, Michael Douglas and Michael Angarano.

The film tells an electrifying tale of espionage and betrayal, a female covert ops specialist (Carano), who works in the deadly world of international operatives, strikes back after discovering she's been double-crossed by someone close to her in the agency.

Hugh Jackman Updates on The Wolverine

With the highly-anticipated franchise sequel, The Wolverine, finally set to film next year, MTV caught up with leading man Hugh Jackman to chat about what fans can expect. While the previous film, X-Men Origins: Wolverine landed a PG-13 rating, Jackman says that a plan may go through that would allow director James Mangold to shoot for two different cuts.

"There's such great temptation to make an R-rated 'Wolverine'," he says, "I've always felt that. I know a lot of fans would like that. I totally get it. If there was ever a superhero that was going to be R-rated, it's Wolverine. However, in the last ten years, I've also met many, many 12, 13, dare I say 10, 14, 15 year-olds who, for them, Wolverine is not just cool, you see it in their eyes. He's everything to them. So my thing is -- which James Mangold and I talked about -- is let's not put it off the table. There's even a talk of us doing two versions, as in finding a way for us to do both as you shoot it, which could be really cool. But you need to have a really good reason to exclude those fans."

Real Steel is the Worldwide Champ This Weekend

The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Click here for the full box office estimates of the top 12 films and then check back on Monday for the final figures based on actual box office.

DreamWorks Pictures' Real Steel opened in first place at both the domestic and international box office this weekend. Domestically, the Shawn Levy-directed action drama earned an estimated $27.3 million from 3,440 theaters, an average of $4,729 per location. Internationally, the Hugh Jackman-starrer added $22.1 million from 19 markets for a worldwide total of $49.4 million after one weekend. The film, distributed by Disney, cost about $110 million to make.

Domestically, Columbia Pictures drama The Ides of March debuted in second place with an estimated $10.4 million from 2,199 theaters. Co-written, directed, produced by and also featuring George Clooney, the film stars Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Marisa Tomei, Paul Giamatti, Jeffrey Wright, Max Minghella and Evan Rachel Wood.

Last week's champ, Warner Bros.' Dolphin Tale dropped down to third with $9.2 million its third weekend for a total of $49.1 million. The family pic cost about $37 million to produce.

Columbia's Moneyball also dropped two spots to fourth, bringing in another $7.5 million for a three-week total of $49.3 million. Starring Brad Pitt, the drama cost $50 million to make.

Summit Entertainment's 50/50, which cost just $8 million, rounded out the top five with $5.5 million its second weekend and has earned $17.3 million so far.

Sixth place belonged to TriStar's Courageous. The $2-million budgeted film collected $4.6 million this weekend for a two-week total of $15.9 million.

Despite hitting Blu-ray and DVD in Diamond Edition format this week, The Lion King 3D took in another $4.6 million and has now earned $86 million in four weeks of re-release.

In limited release, Emilio Estevez's The Way earned $132,400 from 33 theaters for an average of $4,012, while The Human Centipede 2 (Full Sequence) brought in $54,000 from 18 theaters, an average of $3,000 per site.

The New Trailer for Happy Feet Two!

Warner Bros. Pictures has debuted the full new trailer for Happy Feet Two, coming to 3D, 2D and IMAX 3D theaters on November 18. Steve Jobs: 1955 - 2011

Apple issued the following statement today that Steve Jobs has passed away at the age of 56 due to complications from pancreatic cancer:

The world has lost a visionary. And there may be no greater tribute to Steve's success than the fact that much of the world learned of his passing on a device he invented. Michelle and I send our thoughts and prayers to Steve's wife Laurene, his family, and all those who loved him.

Bill Gates released the following statement:

I'm truly saddened to learn of Steve Jobs' death. Melinda and I extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, and to everyone Steve has touched through his work. Steve and I first met nearly 30 years ago, and have been colleagues, competitors and friends over the course of more than half our lives. The world rarely sees someone who has had the profound impact Steve has had, the effects of which will be felt for many generations to come. For those of us lucky enough to get to work with him, it's been an insanely great honor. I will miss Steve immensely.

George Lucas issued this statement on the death of Jobs:

The magic of Steve was that while others simply accepted the status quo, he saw the true potential in everything he touched and never compromised on that vision. He leaves behind an incredible family and a legacy that will continue to speak to people for years to come.

The New International Trailer for The Adventures of Tintin

A new international trailer for Steven Spielberg's The Adventures of Tintin appeared briefly online a week ago before being pulled, but you can now watch it officially using the player below.

Another Happy Day Debuts Red Band Trailer

New Avengers Character Details

There's been an onslaught of The Avengers news today with the EW cover, photos, more photos and character headshots. Now EW offers a look inside the magazine with character profiles on each member of the team, some of which tease important plot details.

“He’s the most – guy, but a total loose cannon," says Mark Ruffalo of playing Dr. Bruce Banner/The Hulk, "No one wants to set him off except for Iron Man... who just wants to see him pop. It’s funny, there’s a really cool dynamic between Tony Stark and Banner. Banner actually enjoys it, and finds it really refreshing. They’re a lot alike in a strange way. They’re both these kind of scientists who are mavericks, kind of renegades. Banner, for all his mild-mannered mythology, he’s still the dude who was testing some pretty crazy s–t on himself, so he has that rebel streak in him.”

It is also stated that Banner wants to be a member of the team, but that rest of the group considers him a liability. As for keeping the Hulk in check, the duty seems to fall to Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye, who will also share a backstory with Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow.

“[Hawkeye is] the only one who can really take down The Hulk with his tranq tip arrows," says Renner, adding "...The only sort of thing I cling to is the relationship of past experiences with Scarlett’s character, with them both being human. ”

Though Captain America was the hero we saw most recently on the big screen, Chris Evans says that things have changed between his solo film and The Avengers and that we'll see a darker take on Steve Rogers.

“It’s just about him trying to come to terms with the modern world," Evans explains, "You’ve got to imagine, it’s enough of a shock to accept the fact that you’re in a completely different time, but everybody you know is dead. Everybody you cared about.. [E]verybody he went to battle with, all of his brothers in arms, they’re all dead. He’s just lonely. I think in the beginning it’s a fish out of water scene, and it’s tough. It’s a tough pill for him to swallow."

Though the team is going head-to-head with Tom Hiddleston's Loki, Chris Hemsworth reveals that his Thor won't necessarily be the most at odds with his half-brother.

“I think [Thor's] motivation is much more of a personal one," he says, "in the sense that it’s his brother that is stirring things up. Whereas everyone else, it’s some bad guy who they’ve gotta take down. It’s a different approach for me, or for Thor... I’ve been frustrated with my brothers at times, or family, but I’m the only one who is allowed to be angry at them. There’s a bit of that.”

Wanted 2 Moving Forward

It appears that Wanted 2 is finally moving forward at Universal Pictures. Derek Haas, who, with writing partner Michael Brandt, adapted the 2008 original, tweeted the following this morning:

Michael and I were just hired by Uni to write WANTED 2.

Following the post, The Wrap caught up with Haas, who said that the film is currently without a director but that the storyline will, "take off after the events of what just happened. Pick up Wesley a few years later and go back in for another round."

Though unconfirmed, the implication is that James McAvoy will return to the role of Wesley Gibson, an accountant-turned-assassin. The original also starred Morgan Freeman and Angelina Jolie, but at least the latter does not plan on returning.

"Being dead makes it difficult," she said last year, "They were [trying to bring me back], but I kind of feel like if I die in a movie, I should die actually... It would just be doing the exact same thing in another movie, so it's not that interesting to me."

To answer 2 questions I've been asked today: our draft of W2 will be Fox-less and Loom-less.

Fox, of course, refers to Jolie's character and the Loom to the mystical device that dispensed assassination targets in the original.

A New Poster Arrives For The Rum Diary

Following the minimalist teaser poster, FilmDistrict has released a new one-sheet for The Rum Diary that plays up the film's star, Johnny Depp. Check it out below, courtesy of IMP Awards.

Reprising his role as a Hunter S. Thompson alter-ego, Depp plays New York journalist Paul Kemp, who travels down to San Juan, Puerto Rico to work at the local paper.

Previously, Depp played Thompson in Terry Gilliam's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and was the narrator for Alex Gibney's doc Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson.

Also starring Amber Heard, Aaron Eckhart, Giovani Ribisi and Richard Jenkins and directed by Bruce Robinson, The Rum Diary is scheduled to open on October 28.

Thor 2 Plot Details Revealed

On the heels of the breaking news earlier today that Patty Jenkins is likely to sign on as the director of Marvel Studios' upcoming Thor 2 comes the sequel's first plot details, straight from studio president Kevin Feige.

"[We're going to] take Thor literally to other worlds," Feige told EW, "...[It will] primarily be the journey of that character, of he and Jane Foster and how the new dynamic with his father is working out, as well as what are the broader stakes for The Nine Worlds."

The inclusion of Foster and Odin in the plot hints that Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins are likely to reprise their respective roles, but leading man Chris Hemsworth is, at the moment, the only fully confirmed cast member for the July 26, 2013 release.

Batman: Year One is based on the landmark 1987 DC Comics titles from 12-time Eisner Award winner Frank Miller and illustrator David Mazzucchelli. The film depicts young Bruce Wayne’s return to Gotham City in his first attempts to fight injustice as a costumed vigilante. The playboy billionaire chooses the guise of a giant bat to combat crime, creates an early bond with a young Lieutenant James Gordon (who is already battling corruption from inside the police department), inadvertently plays a role in the birth of Catwoman, and helps to bring down a crooked political system that infests Gotham.

Primetime television stars Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad"), Ben McKenzie ("Southland," "The O.C."), Eliza Dushku ("Dollhouse," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer") and Katee Sackhoff ("Battlestar Galactica") provide the core voices for Batman: Year One. Three-time Emmy Award winner Cranston gives voice to young Jim Gordon, while McKenzie makes his animated voiceover debut as Bruce Wayne/Batman. Dushku and Sackhoff fill the roles of Selina Kyle/Catwoman and Detective Sarah Essen, respectively. Alex Rocco (The Godfather) is the voice of crime lord Carmine Falcone.

Animation master Bruce Timm is executive producer of Batman: Year One. Lauren Montgomery (Superman/Batman: Apocalypse) and Sam Liu (All-Star Superman) directed from a script penned by Academy Award nominee Tab Murphy (Gorillas in the Mist, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse).

The Full Trailer For The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo Arrives!

Columbia Pictures has just debuted, through iTunes Trailers, a new, extended trailer for director David Fincher's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, starring Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgård, Steven Berkoff, Robin Wright, Yorick van Wageningen and Joely Richardson.

Opening in theaters on December 21, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the first film in the studio's three-picture adaptation of Stieg Larsson's literary blockbuster "The Millennium Trilogy." The movie is based on the first novel in the trilogy, which altogether have sold 50 million copies in 46 countries and become a worldwide phenomenon.

Poster Revealed for Paranormal Activity 3

Paramount Pictures has revealed the poster for Paranormal Activity 3, opening in theaters on October 21. The third installment was directed by Ariel Schulman and Henry Joost.

The first movie had a budget of just $15,000 and earned $193.4 million worldwide, while the second cost $3 million to make and earned another $177.5 million worldwide.

At the beginning of the 20th century, China is in a state of crisis. Sigourney Weaver Talks Avatar 2 and Ghostbusters 3

Next week, Sigourney Weaver stars opposite Taylor Lautner in the John Singleton thriller Abduction. ComingSoon.net caught up to the actress at today's press junket and, while we'll have a full interview with her about that film posted shortly, she also offered brief updates on two highly-anticipated franchise sequels.

"Don't worry, I will be back," she said of Avatar 2, confirming the hint that she dropped nearly a year ago, "Jim [Cameron] says no one ever dies in science fiction. He's told me the stories for the next two movies and I have to say that they're absolutely wonderful and there's a real treat in store. Now we just have to make them."

While there's not yet a specific start date, Weaver reiterated the plans to shoot sometime next year as well as a production schedule that will have Avatar 2 and 3 shot back-to-back.

On the Ghostbusters 3 front, things are looking a bit more uncertain. Despite recent reports from Dan Aykroyd that the project would move forward in early 2012, Weaver says that it's been some time since her preliminary discussions about making a return appearance as Dana Barrett.

"I have yet to read the script," she said, "I've had a couple of calls and I know they're rewriting and all I said was that I hope my son, Oscar, has grown up to be a Ghostbuster and Ivan Reitman said yes. Beyond that, I have no idea. I hope it comes together, but we already did two wonderful films and, if we have to let this one go, that's fine."
